About Madhupur

Madhupur in Jharkhand a small town falling under the Deoghar district. It is a beautiful town surrounded by two monsoon rivers, Patro Nadi and Jaynti Nadi which provide immense greenery to the place. Famous for its Bengali sweets from which it is believed that the name of the town is derived the town is equally known for its Dairy Farming. With a population of nearly 47,349 and an average literacy rate of 63%,which is above the national literacy rate the town is day-by-day making rapid progress in all aspects. The city is a Legislative Assembly Area and falls under the Godda Constituency. Having a main Railway Junction, Madhupur is thus well-connected by road & railways to all major parts of the country. Madhupur attracts tourists due to its laidback nature, sweet waters, fresh air and natural atmosphere thus gaining the title of being ‘The Health Resort of Jharkhand’.

Past & Present of Madhupur

Madhupur as the rest of India has witnessed the rule of different dynasties & rulers till it finally came under the British Rule. The town gained importance due to its calm envoirment & immense natural beauty and many noted writers, poets, educationists came & built homes here, to pursue their creative writing in peace & solitude. During the period of 1910 to 1970 many eminent personalities of Kolkata visited this town mainly during Durga Pooja, Summer & Christmas vacations. Mr. Deb Narayan Kundu played a key role in building nearly 32 holiday bungalows for the use of these notable persons coming from Kolkata. Today these bungalows have been converted into guest houses and heritage buildings attracting tourist to this place. The people of Madhupur actively participated in the freedom struggle. As per history the Municipality Office of Madhupur was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1910. After gaining Independence the town became a part of Jharkhand state and is now making good progress and showing significant growth under an able government.

The noted Scientist & Educationist, Asutosh Mookerjee from Bengal and his son, Uma Prasad Mookerjee - the famous travel writer stayed in Madhupur, the house built by them is known as Gangaprasad House is now a heritage building & tourist palce in Madhupur.

Capt. Debendra Chandra Mazumdar from Bangladesh, who was an eminent physician, who stayed here from 1945 till his death in late sixties

Mr. Nitya Gopal Roy, Retd. District Magistrate of Bengal is another noted personality also lived here.

Geography & Climate of Madhupur

Madhupur city is located at 24.25°N 86.65°E and is about 228 metres (748 ft) above sea level. The average temperature during the hot summer months ranges from 23°C to 45°C but is comparatively low during the winter & rainy season. The area gets good rainfall during the Monsoon season which starts from early July and lasts till late September. The best time to visit Madhupur is thus from late June to April end when the weather is quiet pleasant making it enjoyable to explore the city.
